Manitoba grand chief calls for better cell service after mass stabbings
A Manitoba grand chief says better cell coverage could help responses to emergencies such as last week's mass stabbings on Hollow Water First Nation. Grand Chief Jerry Daniels of the Southern Chiefs' Organization says First Nations deserve connection to emergency services the same as other communities. An 18-year-old woman was killed and several others were hospitalized last Thursday, after the stabbings in homes on the reserve. The attacker later died in a highway crash with an RCMP vehicle. The community of more than 1,000 residents, northeast of Winnipeg, lacks cell phone service and people rely on alternatives, including landlines and wireless network calling. Bell Canada says it currently covers about 99 per cent of Canadians and is working with governments to expand coverage. Health officials say four patients from the community have been discharged and they the expect all remaining patients to be released in the coming days.
