Good Showing For SRSS At Fastpitch And Baseball Championships

The Steinbach Regional Secondary School had a win and two losses at the Provincial High School Girls Fastpitch Championship this past weekend in Winkler. The Sabres downed Carberry 11-1 and then lost 1-0 to Boissevain and 4-2 to Dauphin. Morden beat Vincent Massey of Brandon 13-11 in 9 innings in the final. The SRSS had two wins and a loss at the Provincial High School Baseball Championship in Stonewall. The Sabres beat Morden 10-4 and Pilot Mound 11-8 before losing to Stonewall 12-3 in the quarter-finals. Crocus Plains downed the host Rams 11-4 in the final.

The Carillon Sultans swept a doubleheader from the St.James A's Sunday. The Sultans won the opener 7-0 and took the second game 8-6. Carillon improved to 9 and 4 and are in second place in the Manitoba Junior Baseball League. The Sultans are one game back of the defending champion Elmwood Giants.

The Mitchell Mariners had a win and a loss Sunday in the Winnipeg Senior Baseball League. The Mariners lost 6-1 to St.Boniface and then beat Springfield 4-3.

The Northern Baseball League's Winnipeg Goldeyes split a pair of games with Edmonton. The Goldeyes edged the Cracker-Cats 2-1 in the completion of a game suspended due to rain on Saturday. Edmonton won the second game 10-7.

Garth Collings of Breezy Bend won his 6th Grey Owl title Sunday at Clear Lake. Collings fired a 7-under par 65 coupled with his first round 68 for a 36-hole total of 133, breaking the record of 134 set by Brian Clark in 1987. Collings finished five shots ahead of Edmonton's Trent Wood.
