Female hockey teams 'Coming Together' in support of Cancer Care Manitoba
The U18 AAA Eastman Selects are among many female teams that will take part in the 'Coming Together' initiative, supporting Cancer Care Manitoba in the name of Payton Chornley. What is 'Coming Together' On July 30th, Payton was diagnosed with lymphoma. She's currently in active treatments and will be unable to play with her U18 RHA team this season. "Coming Together is a celebration of female hockey in Manitoba," explains Payton's father, Shaun. "It's supporting Cancer Care Manitoba Foundation, mainly pediatrics . It's directly connected to supporting my daughter, whose fight started near the end of July. End of the day, this comes back to Payton, her team, and Payton wanting to give back. We had such amazing treatment and experience with the good folks at Cancer Care Manitoba and the pediatrics side, they've just been so incredible. She really wanted to give back and said rather than having gifts, like teddy bears or blankets, which she's been really grateful for, she wanted to give back, let's have people give back to Cancer Care, let's celebrate the game, and hockey. It's what she loves to do, and it's all snowballed. It's going to be a great celebration of female hockey, and a great way to give back to the community." Raising money and awareness Many teams from around Manitoba have jumped on board, including the Eastman Selects and Pembina Valley Hawks, who will be having an exhibition game on Sunday at the CRRC in Niverville at noon, with 50/50 proceeds going to 'Coming Together', and it's support like that that has blown Shaun Chornley away. "We're very, very grateful," Chornley says with a gracious smile. "We're very humbled. We're beyond words, we just can't believe the support has been so overwhelming. There's a special group of people out there, and it means a lot to us." Chornely says other teams have contacted him to let them know they're wanting to be involved. "Teams have done the work, we haven't gone out and asked anyone, they've done it all on their own. So, the Winnipeg Ice, Winnipeg Avros, the Interlake Lightning, the Pembina Valley Hawks, it's remarkable." Included is the big game on September 24th, when The Rink will take on Balmoral Hall in the CCSHL season opener. "That evening, will be fully in support of Cancer Care Manitoba Pediatrics, and The Children's Hospital Foundation." The money raised from game day entry free (donation,) PWHL autographed memorabilia auction, PWHL game day experience, Pizza from Boston Pizza, contests and photos with the Stanley Cup, will be going to the cause. Province wide support In the name of Payton Chornley, teams, players and organizations from around Manitoba will do what they can in the fight against cancer, and Shaun can't thank everyone enough for the support for his family, and families like his. "We're very, very appreciative. It shows us how Payton is so loved in the hockey community. These are kids and people we've played against or with over the years. She's developed such an amazing bond with the players, we're just so incredibly grateful. We look forward to seeing everybody, celebrating with everyone on the 24th, boosting Payton's morale on that day, and a heart felt thank you to all the teams that are doing things leading up to that day."
