Volunteers with Safe Families Canada Steinbach have many different gifts to share, and one of those gifts is having some experience with home renovations. 

Michelle Peters recalls a time they offered this type of support to a dad who had a lot going on with his growing family, and there were unfinished projects around the house. 

“And I said to him, ‘Would it help you to be able to have someone spend a couple of afternoons, finishing up the trim work and stuff like that?’ And he didn’t say anything,” Peters says. “Finally, I looked over at him, wondering, did I cross a line? And I realized he was struggling not to cry. He finally said, ‘That would be amazing.’”

Chapter Director Sue Doerksen tells us they were able to offer strong support to a refugee woman who worried that her children would end up in foster care because she did not have a support network nearby. 

“She arrived in Canada with her 2-year-old and was pregnant with twins at the time,” Doerksen says. “She didn’t know anyone here. She was wondering what she was going to do with her toddler when she went into the hospital to give birth.” 

This mom was soon surrounded by volunteers, who quickly became her friends, and was supported with food and childcare.

Family Placement Coordinator Kelly Decrue gives us some numbers as Safe Families Canada Steinbach gets closer to ending their second year in our community. 

“In this year alone, we have had 69 referrals and served 32 of those families,” Decrue reports. “A lot of those families that we haven’t been able to serve, it’s just because we haven’t had enough volunteers.” 

Decrue says they have 5 active host families, 48 general volunteers, hosted 18 children so far this year and that comes to 403 bed nights.
