The Mitchell Expos captured Baseball Manitoba’s Provincial 11U championship on their home diamond this past Sunday.

“We’re extremely pumped to be Tier 1 Provincial champs,” texted Expos coach Lawney Penner. “There were a lot of great teams at this year’s Provincials and for us to come out on top is a huge accomplishment which we’re very proud of.”

The Expos met the Winkler Mariners in an epic gold medal game Sunday afternoon.

“Both starting pitchers pitched amazing and maxed out at 75 pitches with the score tied 1-1,” noted coach Penner. “In the top of the fifth inning Winkler scored four runs to go up 5-1. As the boys came off a little disheartened, we reminded them that they’ve been the comeback kids all season and there is no reason they couldn’t do it again. The boys dug in and got five runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 6-5. We then shut them down in the sixth for the victory.”

Mitchell finished first in Pool A with a 3-1 record.

On Friday the Expos defeated the Winkler Blue Jays 5-2 and blanked Lundar 10-0. On Saturday Mitchell shutout Steinbach 5-0 and lost 1-0 to the Winkler Nationals.

The Expos earned a trip to the gold medal game thanks to a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Hartney in the semifinals on Sunday morning.

“To win at home was amazing,” remarked coach Penner. “We had so many community members there to support us as well as grandparents, aunts and uncles and friends of the families. The environment was electric which made it so special for the boys. For me personally, to have a Mitchell team win Provincials at home, coaching with my friends on diamonds where my dad spent a lot of time with his friends to build for Mitchell kids to be able to have home tournaments, it meant so much.”

It was an historic day for Mitchell baseball as two teams from the community won Provincial championship banners on Sunday.

“To have our Minor age kids win Tier 3 Provincials in Boissevain was awesome to hear,” said Penner. “They went 6-0 and put up a lot of runs. We’re super proud of them as well. We have a strong program in Mitchell with a great bunch of boys and dedicated coaches. With coaches like Matt Banman, Paul Reimer, Mike Reimer, Matt Block and Delbert Penner pouring time into our kids I believe our program will continue to strengthen.”

Coach Penner also praised the people who made their Provincials in Mitchell a tremendous success.

“Paul and Naomi Reimer spent countless hours planning and preparing the whole event. They did a marvelous job. Denis Fountain and his crew at the park did an outstanding job getting our diamonds ready in a tough rainy season. Luke Bergmann, Elmer Toews and Gus Durksen made up our provincial committee and made sure things ran smoothly. Candace Morrow was the Baseball Manitoba rep who spent the whole weekend there taking care of any questions or disputes.”
