MIX96 listeners keep busy with fall chores, studies, and cereal
As temperatures dip and leaves start to fall, MIX96 listeners are making the most of October — some by tackling yard work and others by hitting the books. College student Taylor says her month is all about studying biology and chemistry, with plenty of late nights fueled by her go-to snack. “Cereal is my study food,” she laughs. “It’s quick, easy, and you can eat it anytime.” While Taylor’s fall focus is academic, many listeners say their attention has turned to yard work — and for some, that means more mowing than usual. “I’m mowing the lawn more now in the fall than I did all summer,” says Aaron, who’s surprised at how quickly his grass keeps growing. He adds that raking and bagging leaves have become part of the same routine. “It goes with the mowing of the lawn, so just bagging it all,” he says. Meanwhile, Angelle is getting a head start on winter prep. “We’re still kind of winterizing, just putting things away,” she explains. “We do more of the gardening thing — putting hoses away, picking tomatoes, and putting patio furniture into storage.” Today is the final day of the season for Steinbach's Community Compost Depots, with three locations across the city, open from 9 am-3 pm. The depots are located at: * Woodlawn School yard (411 Henry St) * Stonybrook Middle School (77 Lumber Ave) * Smith Neufeld Jodoin Law Office (85 Provincial Trunk Hwy 12) What to compost: * Vegetables & fruit (fresh, cooked, canned) * Coffee grounds / Filters * Tea leaves / bags * Egg shells * Bread * Plain rice / Plain pasta * Garden waste * Weeds without seeds * Grass clippings * Leaves Do not compost: * Meat / Fish / Bones * Eggs / Dairy Products * Oily foods / Sauces * Pet waste, Diseased plants * Metals, Synthetic materials * Plastic / Petroleum products Listeners say staying ahead on fall chores leaves more time to enjoy the crisp weather and cozy evenings ahead. Whether it’s books or backyards, it seems everyone has their own way of embracing the season. The MIX96 Morning Show continues to check in with listeners each week about life, laughter, and what’s happening across the southeast. -With files from Corny Rempel.
