Ethan Unger had two goals and an assist as the Steinbach Huskies defeated the Springfield Xtreme 5-2 in Oakbank. Troy Friesen, Mason Martens and Ian Friesen also scored for the Huskies who improved to 19-1 and clinched first place in the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League. Steinbach also earned a bye to the semifinals. Jacob DaSilva and Braeden Rebeck replied for the second place Xtreme who saw their record fall to 13-5. 


Reed Peters stopped 43 shots and Mike Rey and Andrew Clark scored two goals each as the Morden Bombers defeated the Red River Wild 4-2. TJ Matuszewski and Blake Forsyth did the goal scoring for Red River. The Bombers (7-4-0-1) moved in a tie for third place with the Ile des Chenes Northstars. The Wild (5-5-2-1) are in a tie for fifth place with the defending SEMHL champion Warren Mercs and Winkler Royals.


Kyle Connor scored the go-ahead goal at 7:19 of the third period and Karson Kuhlman sealed the deal with an empty netter with 43 seconds remaining as the Winnipeg Jets downed the Buffalo Sabres 4-2. Dylan Samberg and Josh Morrissey also scored for the Jets who received a 39-save performance from Connor Hellebuyck. Winnipeg will wrap up its three-game road trip tonight when they meet the Pittsburgh Penguins. 


Kerri Einarson dropped a 5-4 decision to Satsuki Fujisawa in an "A" Event qualifier Thursday night at the Grand Slam of Curling's Canadian Open in Camrose, Alberta. The three-time defending Scotties Tournament of Hearts champions will meet Rachel Homan in a "B" Event qualifier this afternoon. Kaitlyn Lawes will face Eun Ji Gim and Abby Ackland will take on Anna Hasselborg in other "B" qualifiers. Jennifer Jones will meet Michele Jaeggi and Beth Peterson will face Stefania Constantini. The winners will advance to "C" qualifiers on Saturday morning. Matt Dunstone will take on Ross Whyte in the men's "B" Event qualifier. Reid Carruthers will face John Epping. That winner will advance to a "C" qualifier.


Midfielder Jessie Fleming and coach Bev Priestman have been shortlisted for the Best FIFA Football Awards. Fleming is one of 14 nominees for top women's player. She was named the Canada Soccer Player of the Year for the second year in a row in December. Priestman is one of six candidates for best women's coach. 

 

The Landmark Blues have six games left in the regular season schedule. Blues manager Dan Skjaerlund will join Clayton Dreger on the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League Report which airs Fridays at 5:15 p.m. on AM 1250 Radio.
