The second Taste of Summer Charity BBQ this summer is taking place on Wednesday and Trailblazer Life Choices will be receiving the donations this week.

Rayann Kuban with Trailblazers Life Choices says the organization began in Winnipeg in 2005 and she has been with them for the past 18 years.

“Trailblazers is a not-for-profit organization that supports adults living with intellectual disabilities,” she explains. “We support approximately 170 people and we have about 320 staff employed throughout Winnipeg and Steinbach. We offer day services, residential services, transportation services, and we have community homes and opportunities for supported independent living.”

Kuban says that residents are likely to see Trailblazer vans around Steinbach and want residents to know they are about promoting inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities.

“The Steinbach community is really great at including the people we support. We work with a lot of other nonprofit organizations in the area, some church groups, everyone's really welcoming.”

She shares where the donations will be going.

“We started renovations a couple years ago and we haven't finished them,” she says. “We're looking to build an accessible kitchen and it's going to be an expensive one, so, any kind of donations in kind, cabinetry, appliances, we're really open to anything, but obviously, monetary donations would be greatly appreciated to make this opportunity possible for the people in our program to have cooking classes and gain life skills.”

The kitchen will look different than a generic one and modifications will need to be made.

“The island would need to be lower, and the appliances need to be accessible to people who use wheelchairs, it’s not just your generic kitchen for sure.”

To support this great organization, head over to the corner of Main and Lumber in front of SCU on Wednesday, July 10 between 11am and 1pm for a smokie, while supplies last.

Lunch is a minimum donation of $2.00 but feel free to donate more!
