The St. Adolphe Councillor in the Rural Municipality of Ritchot continues to push for a reduced speed limit south of his community.

Jason Bodnarchuk says the 50 kilometre per hour (km/h) speed limit along Provincial Road 200, should be extended further south down that road. He notes it makes no sense that both Tourond Creek Drive and the driveway to the daycare are along a 70 km/h stretch. Bodnarchuk says this is particularly dangerous because there is only a single lane in each direction at both of those turnoffs.

"You have people turning into a daycare with small kids," Bodnarchuk points out. "Tourond Creek has grown a significant amount."

Ritchot Council is asking for Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure to consider running the 50 km/h zone all the way south until about halfway between Tourond Creek Drive and Leblanc Road.

Bodnarchuk says over the years he has heard of a couple of close calls involving motorists. And though he is not aware of any collisions, Bodnarchuk says this is something he has been fighting for since he first joined Council.

"I always thought it was kind of weird for the speed to rise before the turn into a development area," says Bodnarchuk. "I have had some people reach out about their concerns, especially with the new daycare and I've brought this forward before."

Bodnarchuk says he will keep fighting for this, with hopes of getting the speed limit changed.

Meanwhile, Bodnarchuk says this request by Ritchot Council will now be sent to Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure (MTI). He notes MTI will likely be doing a study on the request.

"I'm really hoping that this can go through," he adds. "One of the things I campaigned on was definitely trying to make Main Street safer."

Bodnarchuk says along with the rest of Council, they are doing their best to make this happen.
