The Rural Municipality of La Broquerie has been denied Disaster Financial Assistance (DFA) from the Province of Manitoba.

In March some roads in the municipality washed out due to overland flooding and an application for financial assistance was submitted by the RM in April. Reeve Lewis Weiss says, from his understanding, this disaster was not large enough for the province to provide DFA to municipalities and, Weiss adds, the municipality has now had to absorb the approximate $200,000 cost.

"It really affects our budget because we dropped a lot of our capital projects we had planned for the year. We just put it into road repair because there were too many disaster areas," notes Weiss. "We were going to do the second mile of Carriere going south off [Highway] 52; we were going to rebuild the base of the road this year so, in the future, it would be ready for pavement. And Loewen Boulevard, that one got put back. Instead, we just brought the sides in and heaped the road with gravel."

Weiss says taxpayers should not be affected by this additional cost to the municipality because capital projects were deferred to provide the necessary cushion for the unforeseen costs.
