Hanover's Fire Chief says there was significant damage to a garage in Blumenort, following an early morning fire.

Paul Wiebe says at 7:50 Wednesday morning, they were called to a structure fire along Crestview Lane. Crews arrived to find an active fire inside one of the garages of a side-by-side duplex.

"Fire was quickly extinguished and contained to the garage itself," says Wiebe. "We did not have any fire extension into the home or into the neighbouring portion of the duplex."

Wiebe says there was some smoke that wafted into the attic, though that was cleared. He notes there is no smoke damage inside the home and the residents will be able to continue living there.

Early estimates are that the fire caused at least $50,000 in damages.

"There will be significant damage to the garage itself, to the interior of the garage," says Wiebe. "As well as all the contents are quite damaged."

He notes the residents were home at the time of the fire but were not injured. Wiebe says there was nobody home in the neighbouring residence.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation and Wiebe anticipates they could have that wrapped up within a day.

Crews cleared the scene at approximately 10 am.
