People are noticing the local talent of a couple of young bakers.

Brooklyn Wolf of Steinbach just finished Grade 11 and she picked up a lot of baking orders during the school year.

“I’ve been making a lot more wedding cakes,” she says. “I have found myself doing that more than like birthday cakes and more than anything.”

It’s a lot of work and it is time consuming to make grand cakes for special occasions like a wedding, and Wolf says it’s also a lot of fun.

“And I never thought that I would actually be making wedding cakes for people.”

She says it’s a dream come true.

During the summer months, Wolf plans to take a bit of time off before getting back into the kitchen to create more wedding cakes, adding that she had to stop taking more orders for the next couple of months because she already has a full schedule.

Wolf says her time management skills have improved a lot, as well as her cake making skills. This will prove to be beneficial as she navigates through a busy grade 12 year.

She offers this advice to anyone hesitant to chase their dreams.

“I would say, ‘Go for it.’ I look back at the cakes I used to make, and they were really good for my age. But now I'm glad I didn't give up and kept going because I never thought I would be where I am today. And if I didn't believe in myself and if I didn't do it, then I wouldn't be here. And part of that is also just voicing it to other people. If I had never expressed to my parents or friends or anyone that I wanted to do this, I would not have gotten the same amount of support and people by my side through this. But since everyone knows my passions then they're able to help me through it and be there with me.”

Caitlin Penner of Sarto has been busy filling special orders, baking for markets and still took on the challenge of getting cakes ready for her high school graduation celebration.

She just turned 16 and worked hard to graduate a year early, celebrating graduation with her sister, Zoey.

The pair worked together to make all the cakes for their party.

“And I knew I wanted to bake for it, so she got on board with me. She decorated all the cakes. I baked, iced and filled them.”

Penner says it was a fun project to do as a team, but she adds it was clear that they do not share the love of baking. She laughs as she recalls how her sister had grown tired of it.

With her high school education finished, this teenaged baker has filled her calendar with dates to bring her goods to a number of different markets. She also has her sights set on getting a vehicle and has decided to get a part-time job to help pay for it.

Both Penner and Wolf are passionate about baking and are enjoying the journey to reach their goals.
