Summer programs are getting started at the Jake Epp Library in Steinbach.

Director Emmalyn Latigay says registration is open and people can easily signup online or by contacting the library for some help getting through the steps.

“We also have a summer reading challenge where kids from Kindergarten to Grade 12 can come and pick up ballots at the circulation desk. They fill them out once they have finished reading a book and bring them back to the library to enter a draw to win one of five gift cards or a full-year library membership (for a non-resident patron). At the end of the summer, we will draw winners on Friday, September 6.”

Latigay says there is also an opportunity to join the TD Summer Reading Club, where you can track your summer reading. TD Summer Reading Club packages are available to pick up at the circulation desk.

“We also have activities going on through the summer. Some of our interns are providing arts and crafts activities for kids. They can come here and participate for free.”

She is excited about a new initiative that will bring books to life. An example Latigay gives is to host cooking workshops to prepare foods that are found in books, and bringing in specialists to lead workshops on how to make small repairs to your home.

While we do have the option to research instructions online, Latigay says in-person experiences can often be more meaningful.

“Having a live experience would be different from watching it (online).”

She believes it will be a lot of fun and notes it is also a great way to meet other people from the community.

Latigay says they are getting positive feedback already regarding their program offering summer library memberships to non-Steinbach residents.
