The Smokemaster BBQ Competition took place in Niverville on Saturday and there were a lot of great dishes served.

They had kids competing in the morning and adults in the afternoon. The very best team of the day received not only a trophy and a cheque, but also the opportunity to compete in the World Food Championships in Dallas.

The winners, Kurt Carter and Stephen McCabe, happily received their golden ticket to Dallas, where they will have the chance to win $300,000.

All money raised at the event goes toward Niverville's Junior 'A' Hockey Team.

"It's a festival town," says Kelvin Cech, head coach of the Niverville Nighthawks. "They love to do cool things, and they love food, and they just love getting together with people. It's like no place I've ever been to before in my life. It's just such a sense of community. They'll rally around a child's barbecue competition just as hard as they'll rally around the Nighthawks' home opener in September."

The Nighthawks will start the season on the road with a game in Steinbach on September 16th before returning home to host the Pistons on September 17th.
