Early Monday morning Steinbach Fire was called to a vehicle fire, but the crew didn't have far to go as it was right in front of the fire hall.

"We were called out about 5:30 am to a vehicle fire which was actually on the front parking area of the fire hall," explains Steinbach Fire Chief Kel Toews. "We arrive to find a van totally engulfed in flames. Nobody around. We extinguished it."

The fire was under control quickly but Toews notes the type of vehicle did extend the process. "It did take a little bit longer (than usual), it was a hybrid so a lot of batteries and sparkage. It looked spectacular.

The veteran Fire Chief notes there was minimal possibility that the vehicle would explode causing further damage. "It was far enough away. There is the chance the gas tank can explode but generally, it doesn't explode spectacularly that would spark the fire hall, which was a considerable distance away."

Toews says it's now in the hands of RCMP. "They were on scene, they took the information they needed and now they will investigate."
