Seine River School Division (SRSD) and the Manitoba Government Employees & General Union (MGEU) Local 145 have reached a tentative agreement for educational assistants, effectively avoiding a scheduled strike action for Monday morning.

Late Saturday night, SRSD and MGEU came to a tentative agreement, which is subject to approval by MGEU's members and SRSD's Board of Trustees. Both negotiation teams have recommended ratification, and MGEU has already shared the news with its membership that the strike action has been postponed, pending a ratification vote set for Thursday, April 20th.

If ratified by MGEU's membership, the SRSD Board will vote on the agreement during its regular meeting on Tuesday, April 25th.

A release from SRSD says both parties feel the tentative agreement addresses compensation concerns for educational assistants and divisional challenges associated with recruitment and retention. They believe that the agreement meets the needs of employees and positions the division well for years to come.

According to the release, both parties are also pleased to have reached a negotiated settlement that prevents disruption to programming and services offered by SRSD schools.

Although details regarding the agreement have not been released yet, the agreement is expected to address compensation and retention issues for educational assistants.
