This is a special time of year for Muslims as we are in the month of Ramadan, a holy month with special meaning.

The Steinbach Mosque is hosting an Iftar potluck Friday evening, March 29th and Saif Asi says everyone is invited to join them for this special meal.

“It will be a big event. Every family from the Muslim community, they will cook their cultural food and they will bring it and share it with others, some will bring their friends. So, it's not only for Muslims, it's for the whole community here in Steinbach. Everyone is welcome to join and see the cultural food and get to know the people here.”

Since the Steinbach Mosque was formed a year ago, holding Friday noon prayers at the Pat Porter Active Living Centre, there have been a few guests who attended prayers to learn about Muslims and their faith.

“We have the Friday prayer and sometimes we get new people coming, joining us and we are always happy to have new people coming and, even if they have questions or even if they just want to observe, to see what we do. Anyone can come and join us every Friday at 1:30 PM at the Pat Porter.”

Ramadan began at sundown on March 10th and ends at sundown on April 9th, 2024.

“Ramadan is a holy month for us because the holy book Quran was revealed to the prophet Mohamed during this month,” explains Asi. “So, this month is really important for us. And God told us that during this month, even rewards will be doubled. We always try to do good stuff to help others, to participate in charity, to help the needy with food or anything else.”

If anyone would like to bring a dish to the potluck on Friday evening, Asi suggests a vegetarian dish as being the safest option, adding that Muslims do not eat pork.
