The Steinbach Pistons play their final game at the Manitoba Junior Hockey League Showcase at the Seven Oaks Sportsplex in Winnipeg this afternoon at 2 p.m. against the Neepawa Titans. The Pistons lost their Showcase opener 4-3 in overtime to the OCN Blizzard on Monday. Raiden LeGall stopped all 30 shots he faced as Niverville blanked OCN 4-0 Tuesday. Brett Tataryn had a hat trick for the Nighthawks while Ty Kennett also scored for Niverville.


Steinbach Regional will play its home opener today (4 p.m.) against the River East Kodiaks at the T.G. Smith Arena. The Sabres lost their Winnipeg High School Hockey League season opener 4-3 to the Westwood Warriors last Wednesday. 


The Winnipeg Jets have won back-to-back games for the first time this season. David Gustafsson and Mason Appleton scored 18 seconds apart in the second period and Winnipeg held on for a 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues at Canada Life Centre. Kyle Connor with his fourth of the season and Morgan Barron into an empty net with 70 seconds left in regulation were the other Jets goal scorers. Connor Hellebuyck made 18 saves. Neal Pionk chipped in with two assists. It was Winnipeg's first game without head coach Rick Bowness, who took a leave of absence after his wife, Judy, suffered a seizure on Sunday. She has since been sent home. The Jets (3-3) play road games against the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday and the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday before hosting the New York Rangers next Monday. 


Golf Manitoba's Awards Reception will take place tonight at the Glendale Golf & Country Club in Winnipeg. The 2023 Female and Male Amateur Golfer of the Year Awards will be handed out. The Female finalists are Addison Kartusch, Cala Korman, Jeri Lafleche and Rhonda Orr. The Male finalists are Jay Doyle, Todd Fanning, Braxton Kuntz and Marco Trstenjak. 


Team Canada will be looking to boost its medal count at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile today. After four days of competition, Canadian athletes have won 58 medals, including 20 gold, 20 silver and 18 bronze. Maggie Mac Neil of London, Ontario picked up her fourth gold medal of the Games on Tuesday. Mac Neil finished tied for first in the women's 50-metre freestyle to pick up her sixth medal in seven events in the pool. 


The next Rugby World Cup in 2027 in Australia will feature more teams, an extra knockout round and a week less to play. The tournament will have 24 teams, the first expansion since 1999 when it went to 20 teams from the original 16. Where the four new teams will qualify from will be determined by World Rugby after a review of the ongoing World Cup in France.
