The preliminary round is over at the Centennial Cup in Portage. Ryan Botterill scored his second goal of the game with 20 seconds left in the third period to lift the host Terriers past the Collingwood Blues 4-3 Wednesday night at Stride Place. Portage will face the Yarmouth Mariners and the Blues will take on the Ottawa Senators in the quarterfinals on Friday. The Battlefords North Stars and Brooks Bandits finished first in their respective groups and earned byes to the semifinals. 


Dylan Guenther scored the go-ahead goal 7:47 into the third period and Nico Myatovic added an empty netter with eight seconds left in regulation as the Seattle Thunderbirds downed the Winnipeg Ice 4-2. Kevin Korchinski and Gracyn Sawchyn also scored for the T-Birds who lead the Western Hockey League's best-of-seven final three games to one. Carson Latimer and Evan Friesen replied for the Ice. Game five goes Friday in Seattle. 


Lawson Crouse scored twice and Winnipeg's Joel Hofer made 16 saves as Canada defeated Kazakhstan 5-1 at the 2023 World Hockey Championship in Riga, Latvia. Joe Veleno, Sammy Blais and MacKenzie Weegar also scored for the Canadians who have three wins and an overtime victory. Canada leads Group B with 11 points while Switzerland is next with nine and Czechia has seven points. Canada's next preliminary round game is Saturday against Switzerland.


The Winnipeg Goldeyes dropped a 5-4 decision to the defending American Association champion Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks at Newman Outdoor Field. Hidekel Gonzalez had a two-run homer for the Fish who play their 30th home opener Friday against the Lake Country DockHounds at Shaw Park.


The 19th Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was held Wednesday night at the Niakwa Country Club in Winnipeg. Added to the Hall were the late Donna Brownridge who helped Elmhurst capture six Provincial Ladies Interclub championships and seven Nassau League titles, Pine Ridge superintendent Derrick Chlopecki, former Rossmere head professional Gerald Morrissey, and the 1991 Manitoba Junior Girls Interprovincial championship team of Raina Best, Brionie Brown, Angela Daykin and Christine Power. 


It's day five of Winnipeg Blue Bombers main camp. Today's practice session at IG Field is from 8 a.m. - 12:25 p.m. The Blue Bombers first exhibition game is Saturday, May 27th against the Edmonton Elks at Commonwealth Stadium.
