The Steinbach Regional varsity boys and varsity girls volleyball teams are South Central Athletic Conference AAAA champions. The SRSS defeated the Dakota Lancers 25-19, 24-26, 20-25, 25-17, 19-17 in the girls final. The Sabres beat the Lancers 25-14, 25-21, 19-25, 25-19 in the boys final.


Ten Zone 13 high school varsity volleyball teams will play in provincial qualifiers today. The Pointe des Chenes Cavaliers are at the “A” girls qualifier in Deloraine and the “A” boys qualifier in Glenboro. Gabrielle Roy Les Roys, Landmark 96’ers, Ecole St. Joachim Braves, Green Valley Pirates and Lac du Bonnet Chargers are at the “AA” girls qualifiers. Les Roy and the 96’ers are in Winnipeg, the Braves are in Russell and the Pirates and Chargers are in Rosenort. Gabrielle Roy and Landmark are hosting their “AA” boys qualifiers. Ecole St. Joachim is in Landmark.


Landon Roberts had two goals and an assist as the Steinbach Pistons defeated the Swan Valley Stampeders 5-2. Dawson Milliken, Nicholas Mikan and Davis Fry also scored for the Pistons who did all their goal scoring in the third period. Chris Fines stopped 36 shots as Niverville shaded the Selkirk Steelers 4-3. Brendan Bottem, Brendan Kerr, Evan Bortis and Desmond Johnson did the goal scoring for the Nighthawks.


The Steinbach Huskies have suffered their first loss of the 2022-23 Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League season. Bryson Loewen and Braden Hildebrand each had a goal and two assists as the Red River Mudbugs won their home opener 4-2 over Steinbach 4-2 in St. Jean. Troy Friesen and Eric Mateychuk replied for the Huskies who started the season with eight straight wins.


Ashton Dubois scored the lone St. Malo goal in the Warriors 3-1 loss to the defending Capital Region Junior Hockey League champion Selkirk Fisherman.


The Eastman Selects fell 4-3 in overtime to the Pembina Valley Hawks at the Sun Gro Centre in Beausejour. Luc De Gagne, Declan Whiteman and Mason Hooper scored in regulation for the Selects who have seven in a row.


Ginger Fast, Sophia Heidinger and Danyel Heppner did the goal scoring and Orienna Kennedy made 25 saves as the Eastman Selects downed the Winnipeg Ice 3-1.


Jonah Wasylak and Nathan Ayotte scored in the shootout as the Red River Wild edged the Aces 2-1 in Ste. Anne in the lone SEMHL game. TJ Mauszewski had the lone goal in regulation for the Wild. It was Owen Blocker for the Aces.


The Brandon Wheat Kings dropped a 5-3 decision to Edmonton. Gavin Hodnett had a hat trick for the Oil Kings including the insurance marker into an empty net with 33 seconds left in the third period. Nolan Ritchie had a pair of goals for the Wheat Kings who are 0-4 on their five-game road trip. Nate Danielson also scored for Brandon.


The Manitoba Moose lost 6-5 to the Texas Stars. Will Butcher scored the tying goal with 10 seconds left in the third period and Jacob Peterson potted the winner 3:49 into overtime for the Stars. Jeff Mallot scored twice for the Moose. Manitoba and Texas combined for six third period goals including four in the final two minutes and 11 seconds.


Murray Warren has a 7-2 record and Mark Franklin is 6-3 heading into the final round robin draw at the Canadian Masters Curling Championship at the Pembina Curling Club in Winnipeg. Judy Colwell finished with a 7-2 record and has qualified for the women’s semifinals.
