Canada will face Czechia in the quarterfinals at the 2024 World Junior Hockey Championship on Tuesday in Gothenburg, Sweden. Macklin Celebrini scored twice as Team Canada defeated Germany 6-3 and finished the preliminary round in second place in Group A with a 3-1 record. Brayden Yager, Owen Beck, Jordan Dumais and Easton Cowan also scored for Canada. Brandon Wheat Kings captain Nate Danielson assisted on Yager’s first period power play goal. Dominion City’s Denton Mateychuk drew an assist on Cowan’s empty netter with 2:46 left in the third period. Mathis Rousseau made 17 saves. Strathclair’s Conor Geekie was ejected from the game 11 seconds into the first period after a check to the head of Germany’s Samuel Schindler. Geekie was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct. The other three quarterfinals feature Sweden against Switzerland; the United States will take on Latvia and Finland will face Slovakia.


The Winnipeg Jets completed a weekend home-and-home sweep of the Minnesota Wild. Vladislav Namestnikov scored the equalizer on the power play goal 4:52 into the third period and Dominic Toninato potted the go-ahead marker less than two minutes later on a delayed penalty to the Wild as Winnipeg defeated Minnesota 3-2 Sunday afternoon in St. Paul. Jets captain Adam Lowry scored his 100th career goal early in the second period. Laurent Brossoit made 24 saves in net for Winnipeg. Minnesota’s Marc-Andre Fleury became the fourth goalie in NHL history to play in 1,000 games joining Martin Brodeur (1,266), Roberto Luongo (1,044) and Patrick Roy (1,029). The Jets beat the Wild 4-2 Saturday at Canada Life Centre.


The Manitoba Moose dropped a 3-2 decision to the Texas Stars. Logan Stankoven scored the tying goal for the Stars on the power play at 18:18 of the third period. Alex Petrovic potted the go-ahead goal 37 seconds later. Brad Lambert and Ashton Sautner did the goal scoring for the Moose.


The inaugural Professional Women’s Hockey League season begins today as Toronto hosts New York. Five Manitobans are playing in the PWHL. Defender Jocelyne Larocque of Ste. Anne and goaltender Kristen Campbell of Brandon are with Toronto; goaltender Corinne Schroeder of Elm Creek is with New York; defender Ashton Bell of Deloraine is with Ottawa and defender Kati Tabin of Winnipeg is on Montreal’s roster.


HC Davos won the 2023 Spengler Cup. Dennis Rasmussen scored twice as HC Davos downed HC Dynamo Pardubice 5-3. The Swiss hosts won their own tournament for the first time since 2011 and their win marked the 100th anniversary of the first Spengler Cup. HC Davos and Team Canada have won the Spengler Cup 16 times each. Canada lost 4-3 to HC Dynamo Pardubice in the semifinals.
