La Broquerie Fire Chief Alain Nadeau is urging motorists to slow down on icy highways.

This follows a two-vehicle collision requiring extrication about a mile and a half west of La Broquerie on Highway 52.

It happened on Christmas Eve at 5:20pm.

“The van with four little kids in there, they hit a patch of ice, lost control and hit the oncoming car,” says Nadeau.

He notes the driver of the oncoming car was unsuccessful in his attempt to avoid the van, and his driver side was struck.

Fire crews had to extricate the lone occupant of the car.

“Everybody should slow down, drive to conditions,” Nadeau says.

The La Broquerie Fire Department responded to 10 calls in December and the chief notes there have been several days of fog along with icy patches on the highways.

Nadeau notes gravel roads are also quite icy.

He says it’s dangerous for his crews to respond to collisions on icy roads in the fog, especially when motorists are driving too fast for conditions.
