Steinbach City Council approved the creation of the Steinbach Sports History Committee and appointed several committee members at Tuesday’s council meeting.

Mayor Earl Funk says that with the Event Centre going up, it was decided that it would be great to have a Sports History Section in the building.

“This was brought forward by our Parks and Rec Manager Russ Dyck. I think it's a great idea. I think it's important that the Event Centre is not just about looking into our future in sports, but also looking into our past. We've got a great history of sports in this community.”

He says this is the perfect place to document Steinbach’s sports history.

“I think that these key people, these key moments in sports, and these stories need to be told, and they need to be recognized, and we need to have a place for them.”

The committee will consist of Jon Sawatsky, Michelle Sawatzky, Terry Frey, Russ Dyck, Bill Dyck, and Jeffrey Bannon.

“I think it works out well to have four members from the community at large, one member from the City, and one member from the Event Centre. And I think that's why this could be a very successful group.”

Councillor Damian Penner says it will be great to have this committee showcase Steinbach’s sports history.

“Steinbach is rich with sports history, both past, present, and hopefully future, and it would be good to have a way to recognize that, especially in a new state-of-the-art facility that is going to be drawing a lot of individuals from outside of our community into our community.”

Councillor Susan Penner believes the appointed committee members will do a great job.

“The names you've given were all excellent names for this that is going to be a very good committee and I'm sure the results be excellent as well.”
