If you’re thinking about New Year’s Resolutions, Wendy Buhler with Buhler Counselling in Steinbach shares her ABC’s of goal setting to help us get 2024 off on a positive note.

A – Appreciate where you are. “Maybe you don't need to set a goal this year,” she says. “Maybe things are okay or maybe your (life is) just too full with things.”

B - Begin with a small goal.

C - Create SMART goals from there.

What are SMART goals? Buhler shares the definition of this acronym.

S – Specific.

M – Measurable.

A – Achievable.

R – Relevant.

T – Time sensitive.

“I have a little example. A common resolution is to lose weight,” she says. “So, a SMART goal with weight loss would be to lose 10 lbs by June 1st by walking 30 minutes three times a week. Ten pounds for most people is achievable. June 1st is time sensitive and it's typically measurable. 30 minutes three times a week is specific and obviously weight loss is very relevant.”

Buhler says a person can put up goal reminders around the house for accountability and find an accountability partner.

“Having somebody to walk alongside you can help make it an easier journey,” she notes, adding that you can also use technology to help keep you on track.

“Find an app to track your progress. There are so many apps that will help you keep streaks. I know that the teenagers try so hard to keep streaks these days so get on board with your kids and find an app that can help you keep track of your streaks.”

Buhler also recommends putting a greater focus on having an attitude of gratitude.

“Studies are showing that if we focus on gratitude, it actually changes the pathway in your brain.”

She says it can be life changing when you focus on the good things that are happening in your life.
