A man from Grunthal was arrested last weekend after slamming into an RCMP vehicle while attempting to evade police.

On Friday at approximately 11:55 pm, Steinbach RCMP received a report of a suspicious vehicle along Highway 52 in Mitchell. Police say checks on the vehicle determined it was stolen.

Officers made patrols but did not locate the vehicle until a second call was received at approximately 1:05 am, alerting police that the vehicle was on Road 19N, south of St. Malo. Officers from Steinbach and St. Pierre RCMP responded.

When officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the vehicle fled and collided head-on with one of the marked police vehicles. The driver of the stolen vehicle was arrested and taken to hospital as a precaution.

Police say a search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of a loaded rifle, an imitation handgun and prescription drugs.

Thirty-year-old Kyle Enns of Grunthal has been charged with assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, flight from a peace officer, possession of property obtained by crime, possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, possession of a firearm knowing that possession is unauthorized, unsafe storage of a firearm and three counts of failing to comply.

Enns was remanded into custody.

The officer involved in the collision was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
