The province is once again supporting organizations that provide students with work in the summer months.

Ron Schuler is the MLA for the Springfield-Ritchot riding which includes Niverville.

“This is the Green Team funding provided by the Government of Manitoba and what it does is it provides funding to different organizations that need help with summer workers. It is for ground maintenance and for beatification projects and this year I am pleased to announce for Springfield, Ritchot, and Niverville $181,000 worth.”

Schuler says many of the recipients are charitable or public organizations. He notes it is matching funding so the organizations themselves also have to kick in their share.

“A lot of the organizations are funded by donations from the community, the RMs step up, the towns step up and they help out and it helps them over the top. It means that maybe instead of hiring one student, they can hire three students. Or, instead of a part-time student, they can make it a full-time student.”

This funding will also help students. Schuler notes “In the end, these are our young people, and they get good paying jobs and interesting jobs in the community, helping our communities, helping our communities be better and nicer places to live.”

Though many of the recipient organizations will hire students to work directly on beautification projects, Schuler says a diverse list of organizations are getting funding.

For example, the Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre will be receiving $27K for a Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Intern. Meanwhile, the Niverville MCC Community Assistance Centre will be receiving $20K for their Niverville Thrift Summer Student Program.

Schuler notes this funding can be used to hire students from high school right through University.
