Grade 8 Zachery Hocaluk had the idea to build a portable USB charger and, after looking up a how-to video, constructed one on his own which he says took a little less than an hour. Hockaluk says he took a connector from a 9V battery and attahced wires from the connector to a switch which connected to a USB outlet. He notes he had the idea of constructing the charger inside a mason jar because it would be able to withstand any heat.

He says it was quite simple and there were other students who saw the charger and were impressed. Hocaluk adds he hasn't tested it yet, but guesses the battery has enough power to charge a device for two straight hours.
