A lot of municipalities are struggling with road conditions right now.

La Broquerie Reeve Ivan Normandeau says they are not an exception.

“I know Hanover and I think all local RMs, are having a hard time with our gravel roads.”

He says these are without a doubt the worst roads he’s seen in a decade.

“I've been on council now for nine years now and this is by far the worst spring we've ever had,” he says. “I feel for people who live on gravel roads and I know that they are in rough condition. We're doing our best for sure to maintain them all and have graders out there to fix them.”

Normandeau assures crews are working hard to fix roads throughout the RM.

“When it starts drying up a lot more than we can, we can work at it and fix all the roads that are damaged right now. It's a tough situation to be in right now, but our public works are out there 12-14 hours a day, working hard trying to fix all these roads. There's some permanent fixes that we're getting as we speak.”

He says a big problem with many of these roads is that they weren’t built up to our current standard in the first place.

“I think sometimes we forget a lot of these roads have been built 40, 50, 60 years ago. So back then the requirements were not the same as they are right now, so a lot of the roads are not built properly and unfortunately now we have to go out there and try to fix them all.”
