Welcome to another Made in Manitoba, thank you for joining us as we welcome Winnipegger Sam Baardman to the program for the first time, as we highlight music form his just released album "Athabasca".

Released this past Earth Day, April 22nd, "Athabasca" is his fourth full-length album, and the project began in 2022 when Sam was exhibiting and performing at a conference he helped put on called “Art, Activism and Advocacy” . That was followed by two weeks last fall at the Coldwater Lab in the Rockies, further influencing the direction of the album.

Environmentalism has been a theme in Sam’s music from his earliest days as a songwriter, and this new album is a culmination of decades of ecological art-making.  According to Baardman, the songs are thoughtful, poetic, and often filled with biting commentary on the current climate crisis, but they never come off as preachy or argumentative.

Lake Winnipeg is one of the songs from the album, and also part of the conversation Sam had with Chris. Below is the lyric video for the track.

Tonight, we welcome Sam Baardman to Made in Manitoba. Music from "Athabasca" .
