50/50 For Kids with Safe Families Canada Steinbach starts today, September 12, and runs until October 4. 

Sue Doerksen from Safe Families Canada Steinbach explains what the organization is for. 

“Our mission is to create extended family-like supports for families in crisis through a community of devoted volunteers. And they're motivated by their compassionate faith to keep children safe and families together.” 

One of their goals is to be a preventative measure for the foster care system. 

“If we can get in there and help a family who is in overwhelm and in crisis before the need for that arises, then that's a win, that is huge.” 

Doerksen says they try to surround families with a good support network of volunteers. 

“They open up their hearts, their homes sometimes, we have host families that may even take in children for a time being. But it's all voluntary with the parents, it's not that we're taking them from you.”  

She says they get referrals from all over the community.  

“You can refer yourself when you are in crisis, you can call and see if it's something we can help with. Refer a family member or a friend.” 

They get referrals from churches, RCMP, Headway, and even CFS. 

“Because we actually work together in partnership with them (CFS) when they can't step in yet,” she says. “There might be something that they need to work through for the time, so then we do short term care with that long term goal of keeping the family together when it's safe and possible to do so.” 

Doerksen explains they try to help families in any way that they can and connect them with different resources in the community. 

“If we can step in and help them or just connect them with resources. They may not know who to all contact in the community when they need different forms of help.”
