Steinbach and Area Animal Rescue’s new shelter is open and it's full of kittens.

President Michelle Neufeld says the building is a dream come true, but all of these homeless kittens is hard to see.

Some of the animals are in better shape than others.

“Just some sad stories and I feel like a lot of people that don't realize how bad it is, should come and volunteer at the building.”

Neufeld urges people to spay and neuter their pets.

Monday was their first day being open to the public and Neufeld says they had many people stop by and play with the kittens that are in good health.

“We have some kittens in the quarantine room, one kitten looked like it had possibly either been thrown out of a vehicle or fell from a vehicle. Kittens often climb up in those vehicles and then you start driving and then they fall out. His bottom lip was torn open, so he's got a little button sewn into his lip, holding it together till it heals.”

Neufeld says it feels surreal to be officially open to the public.

“It was just fun to see everybody come and look at the place and it's overwhelming.”

The shelter operates with the help of many volunteers.

“We usually do two-hour shifts per volunteer, and even if they come and just like sit with the dogs, sit at the cats. That's the biggest volunteer position in my mind because they need that interaction with people.”

The rescue tries to get pets into foster homes to help socialize them, reducing their time in the rescue's kennels.

Steinbach and Area Animal Rescue has their home base in a new facility at 39 Keating Road in Steinbach.
