Update at 4:20 PM:

Steinbach Fire Chief, Kel Toews, says the cause of the fire was electrical.

"When we got here the attic was charged with smoke. So we went up on the roof, cut a few exploratory holes and found that the structure was charred. The cause was electrical and so we had to peel back insulation until we got to clean installation, no charred insulation and now we're cleaning up now."

He adds that due to the nature of the fire, damage will be primarily related to the access holes made in the roof.

"They’ll need roof repairs. We didn't put a whole lot of water in there, so there's little to no water damage. There'll be some rewiring required and the roof will need some work."

On Monday afternoon, Steinbach Fire Crews arrived at the Cornerstone Bible Church and checked the building for an active fire.

They arrived on scene at 2:30pm and an hour later, they were cutting holes in the roof while pouring water in the structure.

Smoke was seen coming from the roof vent and from the newly created holes.

This is a developing story. SteinbachOnline will have more details as they become available.
