The Mayor of Ritchot says construction on the dike at St.Adolphe should be complete by the middle of October.

Jackie Hunt says the $9.6 million project started early last summer. She says the goal was to have the dike finished by the end of September. But a few hurdles along the way have pushed that back by a couple of weeks. Hunt explains some of the challenges included weather delays, securing land and working with Imperial Oil that was performing upgrades of its own on the pipeline running through that area. Yet she says the project is pretty well on schedule and budget.

Hunt says with St.Adolphe being located in a flood zone, development is limited to land that is protected. And when all of the developable land had been purchased, they needed to grow the community.

"When this opportunity came up for some funding through the federal and provincial levels of government it was a once in a long time opportunity to expand our dike and allow for future growth of the community," she says.

According to Hunt, the new dike should allow for an additional 1500 housing units to be built in that community. Some roads and street lights are already in and Hunt says it looks to be a beautiful subdivision. She is hopeful this will trigger new business and residents to the community.

Hunt says if everything goes as planned, the municipality should begin to issue building permits by the end of September. She suggests the first houses could then go up before the snow flies.

This project was funded one-third by the municipality, one-third by the province and one-third by the federal government.
