The St. Adolphe dike expansion ground breaking took place on Friday afternoon.

Richot Mayor Jackie Hunt says this is a very exciting day and admits she never thought she would actually see the project get to this point. She says it has just been announced that Baudry Construction will be building the dike and they will probably get started Monday morning.

"We've got some pretty tight deadlines so we've got to get as much done this year as we can and do the final touches next year. We hope to be all complete by the end of next construction season in the fall of 2016."

Hunt says the dike will encompass about 300 acres of land going almost as far east as the coulee, almost as far north as highway 210, and almost as far south as Le Blanc road.

Hunt notes St. Adolphe is part of the capital region and has grown tremendously in the last 5 to 7 years.

"We were in the process of developing all available land, so we were then locked, we couldn't grow any more. What this does is it will allow more residents, it allows for potential commercial growth, it allows us to bring services in that maybe we couldn't house before because of the number of people that lived here. The options are limitless now, it is exciting."

Hunt says the potential for new services really changes the community.

"We know we are a bedroom community, we are in the people business. If we can bring in services that allow for residents to stay and play in our community rather then always having to commute back and forth to the city, that is a win for everybody."

Hunt says this expansion will allow for 1000 to 1400 new homes depending on what types of buildings are built.
