If you were out and about here in the Southeast last night, you may have noticed a huge halo around the moon.

Pansy Resident Rebekah Sandford says she went out to tend to her sheep around 10 P.M. Wednesday night, looked up, and saw the beautiful phenomenon. She notes, it’s sights like those that making living in Manitoba special.

"I grew up in BC so I am used to the ocean and the mountains and when I moved to Manitoba, I am like 'I gotta find beauty in Manitoba'.  I look at things like that, I look at the sun dogs in the daytime, I look at these moon halos at night and I just stand there in and I'm like 'Manitoba has some beautiful sights also, you just have to look for them."

Sandford says the moon halo phenomenon happens when hexagonal ice crystals are suspended high up in the atmosphere and refract the light of the moon. She notes the moon halos are very similar to moon dogs or sky beams, a phenomenon where pillars of light appear to rise into the sky from street lights.
