Council for the Rural Municipality of Hanover has rezoned land in Mitchell from Residential to Industrial. The land is located on the west side of that community, between Peters Lane and Road 30E, just north of the commercial lots there.

The municipality held a public hearing back in May. At the time, several residents living nearby voiced opposition. Concerns ranged from increased traffic to pollution. There were also questions over the types of businesses that might open shop there.

Following the public hearing, council gave second reading to amend its Development Plan and the matter was sent to the province for approval. The Minister has now okayed the move and Hanover Council has provided third and final reading, making the rezoning official.

"Now we can start the process of getting that all developed so we can sell some lots there," says Reeve Stan Toews.

According to Toews, this should not concern residents in the area. He says there are 12 lots, but they will not be large enough to accommodate heavy industrial operations.

"It's more of your cabinet makers and all kinds of small manufacturing or even maybe some retail stuff, that's what's planned to go in there," he says.

Toews notes there is a demand for this in the municipality. He says the types of businesses that will move onto these lots are currently operating as home based businesses.

"If they do get a lot here they actually have a credible business that has a lot more worth than if they have it in their own yard," suggests Toews.
