Mehl scores first MJHL goal in Pistons victory over Blues
After coming close several times in recent games, Logan Mehl finally managed to score his first MJHL goal, a shorthanded beauty that helped the Pistons defeat the Winnipeg Blues 5-2 on Saturday night. First period One of the hottest lines in the MJHL got Steinbach on the board, as the trio of Evan Gradt, Brody Green, and Marek Miller combined for a beautiful goal. After Gradt cut into the middle lane, the Blues attempted to knock him off the puck, but the hulking forward refused to give up possession, knocking the puck down to Miller, who shot a touch-pass right over to Green, who tucked it into the wide-open net. Green's fifth goal of the year made it 1-0. A penalty late gave the Blues a chance, but it was the shorthanded unit that would do the celebrating. Logan Mehl won the faceoff back to Evan Kabel, and after winning the draw, Mehl bullied his way up the ice and outhustled the Blues defenders, walked in, and wired home his first MJHL goal. "Yeah, I was due," Mehl said with a big smile on his face after the game. The rookies first pushed the lead to 2-0 after twenty minutes. Second period For almost the entire second period, Steinbach owned the puck, won almost every battle, hemmed the Blues in for long stretches, and piled up scoring chances and shots on goal. Credit goes to the Blues netminder, who made save after save, keeping his team in the fight and down by only two. That was until Rory Gilmour took a nice pass from Zhenya Miles, walked in, and leaned into a heavy shot that found the back of the net for his second of the season, and second goal in as many games, pushing the Pistons ahead to 3-0. Miller also picked up a secondary assist. A short time later, on a power play, a point shot from Brett Kaiser went wide, but the Blues' clearing attempt went right to Miles, and with Cullen Ingebritson working hard in front of the net to take the goalie's eyes away, Miles sifted a wrister through for his second goal of the year. Right after the goal, Miles pointed to Ingebritson, acknowledging his hard work, even though he wasn't given credit for an assist. Winnipeg would manage to get on the board, as they put a puck toward the goal, which glanced off a Piston in front and past goalie Easton Thvedt, cutting the lead to 4-1. Third period It took a mere 12 seconds into the third for the Blues to get closer, scoring off a broken play in the slot, getting the game to 4-2. That would be as close as they would get. Steinbach clamped down after that, not letting Winnipeg really get anything going, and when they did Easton Thvedt was there to make the saves. Brett Kaiser scored his first of the year to salt the game away, with Ingebritson, who again bullied his way to the front of the net, drawing all the attention, which allowed Kaiser to walk in and score, and also Jack Greenwell picking up the assists. The 5-2 score would hold the rest of the way, and Steinbach would bank another two points and improve their record to 6-0-1. Game notes Thvedt was very solid, making several key, timely saves. The rookie stopped 24 shots for his second win of the year. The Pistons' power play finished 1-5, while the penalty kill was a perfect 3-3. Steinbach outshot Winnipeg 60-26. Up next Steinbach will have a few days between games, which is great news for several Pistons who are banged up. Cole Cairns, Ryan McDonald, and Eric Cote all have yet to play a game this year, but all three could be nearing a return. Sam Noad, who missed both games over the weekend, is hoping to make a return to the lineup sooner rather than later, but that remains to be seen if he'll be ready for the upcoming weekend. Steinbach has Swan Valley coming to the Southeast Event Center on Friday night, then they'll head to Selkirk on Saturday night.
