Collision at Highway 12 and PR 210 renews focus on planned safety upgrades
A mid-afternoon collision at a well-known intersection near Ste. Anne is once again drawing attention to long-standing safety concerns, as the province moves closer to major upgrades planned for the site. According to Ste. Anne Fire Chief Bob Saindon, emergency crews were called to the intersection of Highway 12 and Provincial Road 210 at 1:56 p.m. on Wednesday. He explains an SUV travelling westbound on PR 210 attempted to cross Highway 12 when it was not safe to do so. It hit a pickup truck pulling a food cart that was travelling southbound, Saindon added. The driver of the SUV was assessed at the scene and did not require medical treatment, said Saindon. The two occupants of the pickup truck, a man and a woman, also declined medical care. Fire crews remained at the scene for approximately an hour to clear the area. Intersection has history of serious collisions The intersection of Highway 12 and PR 210 has been the site of numerous collisions over the years, with residents and local officials raising concerns about safety and visibility. In 2023, Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure completed an in-service road safety review aimed at identifying both immediate and long-term improvements. Following that review, several short-term safety measures were implemented. These included rumble strips on PR 210 approaching Highway 12, red flashing lights on stop signs, larger signage, and refreshed pavement markings. A provincial spokesperson previously confirmed that a functional design study is nearing completion. That study will determine the final design for the intersection, with a focus on improving safety while accommodating future traffic growth. Potential long-term options have included realigning the intersection, installing a roundabout, restricting certain crossing movements, or partially closing access points. Traffic signals were considered earlier in the process but were not among the options presented during recent public consultations. The Rural Municipality of Ste. Anne has formally recommended a roundabout as the preferred solution.
