The Deputy Mayor of Steinbach is excited about a new mosquito control product. Michael Zwaagstra says it could be the perfect solution for Steinbach.

"There is a new product that's currently being tested in Winnipeg. It's called DeltaGard and it kills adult mosquitoes. The preliminary tests are proving to be quite positive. An additional factor is that there is no indication so far of any harmful effects, even in large quantities, to humans. The Winnipeg insect control superintendent has publicly stated that there's a possibility that, if this product is approved for use in Canada, there would be no need for buffer zones at all because there's no possibility of impact to humans."

Zwaagstra says the city needs to pay close attention to this product. It is expected to gain government approval for use in Canada by 2017. He notes it's considerably more expensive than malathion but thinks it would be worth the expense if it turns out to be as good as it's reported to be.

"It's important that it's on our radar screen. If it does end up being approved, I suspect it'll be very popular in a number of cities and so I want to make sure that we're paying attention to this and that, if this product gets approved and, if it turns out to be effective, we should move on this quickly. We don't want to miss an opportunity like this if if becomes approved."
