As we head into a summer that could be warmer than normal, dog owner Katia Bergmann of Blumenort is getting ready to help her two Siberian huskies through the hot days ahead.

“Giving them some pool time and short spurts of exercise. I find they only need about 5 to 10 minutes and then they're good. And then I also like to do a lot of frozen toys and stuff like that, like stuffed Kong's.”

She fills the Kongs with treats like peanut butter or plain Greek yogurt.

“If you’re worried about your dog's weight and you don't want to be giving them extra food, sometimes what I've done is I'll blend up their kibble with some water and then stuff the Kong with that.”

Bergman says this is a great way to provide your dog with mental stimulation without the added calories.

“It's just giving them something different to do aside from just eating their food and really good for mental stimulation, especially if you can't get them as much physical exercise as you normally want to do. And then really taking advantage of rainy days and days that are cooler to get them intense exercise.

When the days are hot, Bergmann says it’s important to stick to cooler times of day for shorter walks, like early in the morning or later in the evening.
