Families took advantage of the great weather on Saturday, taking in the Teddy Bear Fun Day in Steinbach.

It was organized by Agape House, and Outreach Worker Lisa Fast says there were plenty of organizations who participated in the free event.

“We’re hoping people will walk away with maybe a better sense of organizations in Steinbach, what we do, how we can support families,” she says.

Lieutenant Cindi Klassen has been with the Steinbach Fire Department for 30 years and invited the children and teddy bears to check out the fire truck in the Jake Epp Library parking lot.

“It gives us a great opportunity to interact with the public in a non-emergent situation,” she says. “We want to come across as friendly, not scary.”

The event spread across the E.A. Friesen Park with a special clinic staffed by teddy bear specialists to check the health of special teddies of all shapes and sizes. Children also had the opportunity to adopt a bear.

Wildlife Haven volunteers brought animal ambassador Milan, a Mississippi Kite, who came to the animal hospital with an injury and can no longer fly properly. Children were able to get close to the bird and learn about the animal as well as the purpose of the animal rehabilitation centre.

Volunteer Tara MacTavish says attending events like the Teddy Bear Fun Day help the organization to build connections with the public.

“Making them aware of our centre, which is really important, so if somebody does find an injured animal, they know to call us and we will give them instructions on how to rescue the animal,” she says.

Children also had fun climbing into the back of the RCMP vehicle.

Community Constable Dennis Redikop says this event provided a great opportunity to connect with families in a fun way.

“It’s building a good relationship with the community, with young kids, showing that we’re here for them, whenever they need,” he says.

Children were milling around with their parents and teddy bears, checking out each of the stations to get their “passport” stamped and participate in fun activities.
