Harvest in the southeast is nearing completion for this year thanks to the sunshine we’ve had this week.

According to the province's weekly crop report, total harvest is on average 91 percent complete. Locally, Marc Hutlet of Marc Hutlet Seeds in Ste. Anne, says producers are making good progress. He notes the great weather this week has been very beneficial. He notes a lot of acres of corn are being harvested and some producers are finally getting the chance to finish soybeans as well. Like throughout the est of the year, Hutlet says yields are very dependent on the location of the field.

"We can have yields that are sub 100 and then you just go two miles down the road and it could be 160 or 170," says Hutlet, "a lot of farms will average 120 to 130, the guys that got lucky with rain, above that. There are also some people that, again as we discussed earlier this fall that did not get very much rain where it's going to be sub 100."

Hutlet says the sunshine and wind has helped dry crops down which saves farmers time and money on drying. "There's no doubt two weeks ago when guys started, things were still in the high 20s or at 30," notes Hutlet who says that is all depending on the maturity of the crop and the hybrid because that will affect the moisture content.

"It has dropped significantly, you know, five six seven points in the last seven to ten days.

Some farmers in the southeast have reported that they have completed their harvest for the season while others still have a few hundred acres to go.
