The line of Zach Power, Quinton Pepper, and Braden Birnie combined for six points while Jack Rogers also chipped in with a goal and assist as Steinbach defeated the Winkler Flyers 4-1 on Wednesday night.

Coming off a win against the Waywayseecappo Wolverines on Monday, Steinbach looked to take that game plan and keep it rolling against a Flyers team who were coming off a weekend sweep of Steinbach.

At the midway point of the first period, a broken play in the Pistons zone resulted in Winkler getting on the board first. It's the third consecutive game between the two long-time rivals that the Flyers opened the scoring.

Just three minutes later, however, Steinbach would even things up.

A nice outlet pass from Nate Goobrandson hit a streaking Neo Kiemeney who chipped the puck into the Winkler zone. Jack Rogers flew into the zone and along with Kiemeney, freed up the puck and jammed it in the short side, off the Flyers netminder and in to tie the game 1-1. Rogers was given credit for the goal, his 18th of the year with Kiemeney picking up the lone assist.

Before the period would come to a close, Steinbach would strike again. Pepper cleared the puck out of the zone as Braden Birnie raced to retrieve it. He beat the Flyers defender and fluttered a pass over to a streaking Power who went top shelf for his 3rd of the year. With the whole line combining on the goal, Birnie bumps a short two-game pointless streak while Power extended his point streak to 10 games.

In the second period, neither team could find the back of the net and the game remained 2-1 Pistons heading into the third.

The opening minutes of the third period were eventful for both goalies as between bouncing pucks and players crashing the net, life was made pretty difficult for both men in the big pads.

As Winkler pushed for the equalizer but failed, their frustrations grew and it would eventually cost them.

Despite going scoreless on the man-advantage over the night, the Pistons would get an insurance marker while up a man thanks to Power who scored his second of the game to give a little cushion and a 3-1 lead. Zac Patrick and Rogers were given credit for the helpers.

Winkler again pushed and with the goalie pulled late in the game, Pepper took a hit to make a play along the boards, flipped the puck to Birnie who went in on a breakaway with an open net, and scored to put the game away. The 4-1 marker was Birnie's 4th while Pepper capped off a two-point night with the only assist.

"I thought it was a real solid effort from every guy in the lineup tonight" Head Coach Paul Dyck said after the game. "We wanted to take a step and I tthink we did that today. We responded well. We hung in there and battled. We're learning how to win games like this. I thought we were very mature tonight as well. That's another part of the learning process. Lots of good things to takeaway from this one."

Will Hambley finished the night making 24 saves.

The power play finished 1-7 but the goal was a big one while the penalty kill was a perfect 4-4.

Steinbach will wrap up their four-game road trip as they head to Winnipeg to battle the Freeze on Friday night. The game will be broadcast on MIX 96 and SteinbachOnline.com.

Note the start time as it'll be a little later start than usual. Pre-game is at 7:45 pm with puck drop set for 8:00 pm.
