Steinbach’s mayor recognizes there might be some frustrations and inconveniences surrounding the construction of the Loewen and Brandt intersection.

Earl Funk says the city is responding to congested areas and making changes to improve traffic flow.

“It’s just going to be a couple of years of patience and then that intersection will work so much better. It’ll be worth the wait, trust me.”

Funk says the city is growing at a rapid rate and while these construction projects might be an inconvenience, they are necessary.

“We’ve had incredible growth, especially in the last five years.”

Traffic lights have been removed at the intersection of Loewen Boulevard and Brandt Street.

Meanwhile, the Loewen and Hespeler intersection has now become a 3-way Stop to reduce the wait time for drivers turning onto Loewen.

On the west side of Steinbach, the city has noticed traffic backed up on Industrial Road as travelers going south wait to turn onto Highway 52.

The city has requested a review of the signal timing of the traffic lights at that intersection to see if some adjustments can be made to improve traffic flow.

That route has also become popular for motorists looking to avoid the Loewen and Brandt intersection.

While construction is taking place, Funk encourages people to watch for changes to traffic signs and to be patient and kind toward each other.

Meanwhile, he does not see any slowdown in growth for Steinbach.

“It’s like someone’s got the pedal all the way down and we are going full speed, as fast as we can go.”

With continued growth, more infrastructure improvements will be needed to accommodate heavier traffic volumes.
