The long awaited Household Hazardous Waste Depot at the Steinbach landfill site is finally ready to go into service. Solid Waste Supervisor Eldon Wallman says it will open to the public on Friday morning.

"We've been waiting a long time for this. We've been doing these once-a-year 'Hazardous Waste Days' at the fire hall which were extremely successful. There's a lot of that kind of waste in the Steinbach area and now we've got a place to bring it on a permanent basis."

Wallman says the depot will accept things like old aerosol cans, paint cans, silicone glue tubes, old gasoline and kerosene as well as florescent bulbs including the new curly compact florescent bulbs. He adds, for the safety of staff, the materials must be brought to the depot in their original containers.

The Hazardous waste depot will be open Tuesday to Saturday from 9am to 4pm. He notes the $5.00 fee to bring garbage to the landfill does not apply to hazardous waste.

"There is no fee to this. In fact, that $5.00 fee that we charge people to bring garbage, some of that fee has gone into this program, that's funded this program. So there are your dollars at work, you can see where they're going."
