Steinbach firefighters are responding to the call for help in areas impacted by wildfires.

Crews place sprinklers on top of a cottageThe Steinbach crew was asked to spend a couple of days in the Davidson Lake area, located two and a half hours northeast of Steinbach near the Manitoba-Ontario border.

"Five people went up for us. There was a list of probably another five that wanted to go up. You can only send so many people up there, you've still got to protect your city."

Toews notes there are many fire departments in Manitoba, and he suspects there are a lot of firefighters who want to help in any way they can. This commitment allows them to rotate through the fire departments.

Meanwhile, Toews encourages us to avoid having backyard fires until we get more moisture. He says current conditions make it dangerous for lighting any fires at this time.

"We would strongly encourage people to hold off until we have some moisture," he says. "And then, go ahead and have your fire. But let's wait until we have a little bit more moisture and it's not as dangerous."
