Steinbach firefighters spent a couple of hours battling an attic fire late last night.

Fire Chief Kel Toews says they were called to a home on Barkman Avenue at around eleven o'clock.

"When we got there, there was visible smoke from the attic," says Toews.

He notes crews were able to gain access to the attic from inside the house and did not have to cut any holes in the roof in order to extinguish the fire.

"The fire itself was contained to a small area of the attic," says Toews.

However, firefighters had to open up the ceiling in order to attack the fire and after dumping a lot of water on it, Toews says there is extensive water damage. He notes the homeowner will not be living there today.

According to Toews, the cause of the fire is electrical. He does not have a damage estimate and says there were no injuries.

With temperatures around -28 degrees last night, Toews says the cold air certainly created challenges in battling this fire.
