The Steinbach Huskies scored five unanswered third period goals en route to an 8-3 victory over the Macdonald Swarm at the T.G. Smith Centre in game one of their best-of-five Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League opening round series. Brandon Thiessen and Ethan Plett had two goals each for the Huskies while the rest went to Dawson Smith, Ethan Unger, Riley Lawless and Dilan Sawatzky. Zach Plaster, Justin Zurbyk and Dryden Bound replied for the Swarm. Game two goes tonight in Rosenort. Also tonight Niverville will host Red River. The Mudbugs beat the Clippers 6-5 in the series opener Thursday night in St. Jean.

 

Levi Penner scored twice and William Paterson made 29 saves as the St. Malo Warriors defeated the Lundar Falcons 5-2. Evan Wuerch, Jaden Gosselin and Mitchell Penner also scored for the hometown Warriors.

 

The Eastman Selects dropped a 5-4 decision to the Pembina Valley Hawks. Selects captain Janique LaBossiere had a pair of goals for Eastman while the rest went to Jenna Sellen and Ginger Fast. The Selects will play their regular season finale today (4 p.m.) against the Westman Wildcats in Niverville and then open the Manitoba Female U18 AAA Hockey League playoffs Tuesday in Shoal Lake against the Yellowhead Chiefs.

 

The Brandon Wheat Kings fell 4-3 in overtime to the Swift Current Broncos. Marcus Kallionkielli, Chad Nychuk and Nate Danielson scored in regulation for the Wheat Kings.

 

The Winnipeg Jets lost 4-3 to Dallas. Jason Robertson potted the winner for the Stars 3:10 into overtime. Pierre-Luc Dubois, Jansen Harkins and Mark Scheifele with 32 seconds left in regulation did the goal scoring for the Jets.

 

The Manitoba Moose gave up five first period goals and lost 8-2 to the Abbotsford Canucks. Leon Gawanke and Todd Burgess scored for the Moose.

 

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers signed safety Brandon Alexander to a two-year contract. The Orlando native, who was named a CFL All-Star in 2021, returns to the Bombers for a fifth season. Alexander recorded 44 tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble last season.

 

Canada’s medal count is 13 at the Winter Games in Beijing. Quebec’s Eliot Grondin and Meryeta O’Dine of Prince George captured bronze in Mixed Team Snowboard Cross. Canadian athletes have won one gold, four silver and eight bronze medals. In curling – Jennifer Jones has a 1-2 record after losing 7-6 to Anna Hasselborg of Sweden. Brad Gushue lost 7-4 to Niklas Edin of Sweden and has a 2-2 record. The Canadian men’s hockey team dropped a 4-2 to the United States and have a 1-1 preliminary round record.
