The Provincial High School Cross Country championships take place today at Asessippi Ski Area & Resort near Russell. The Brandon Wheat Kings begin their seven-game road trip tonight as they face the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Brandon will also meet the Tri-City Americans, Spokane Chiefs, Seattle Thunderbirds, Portland Winterhawks, Everett Silvertips and Wenatchee Wild who relocated from Winnipeg this past off-season. The Wheat Kings own a 3-3-1 record seven games into the 2023-24 Western Hockey League season. 


The Winnipeg Jets play their season opener tonight when they take on the Flames in Calgary. Defenceman Ville Heinola, who suffered an ankle injury in the Jets final pre-season game last week against the Ottawa Senators, will begin the season on injured reserve. Declan Chisholm is the lone rookie on Winnipeg’s opening day roster. The Jets home opener is Saturday against the Florida Panthers. 


The Manitoba Moose assigned goaltender Thomas Milic, defenseman Simon Kubicek and forward Mark Liwiski to the ECHL's Norfolk Admirals. The current Manitoba roster stands at 30 players, consisting of two goaltenders, nine defencemen and 19 forwards. The Moose open their 2023-24 American Hockey League schedule Friday at Canada Life Centre against the Calgary Wranglers.

The St. Malo Warriors have opened the 2023-24 Capital Region Junior Hockey League season with wins over the Selkirk Fishermen and Beausejour Comets. Long-time Warriors head coach Ralph Collette will join Clayton Dreger on Sportsbeat which airs Wednesdays at 5:15 p.m. on AM 1250 Radio.
