Steinbach Regional will meet College Jeanne-Sauve tonight (8 p.m.) in the semifinals of the Provincial AAAA High School Varsity Girls Volleyball Championship at the Investors Group Athletic Center on the campus of the University of Manitoba in south Winnipeg. The Sabres defeated the Vincent Massey Trojans 18-25, 25-19, 24-26, 25-20, 15-13 in the quarterfinals this past Saturday. The Olympiens swept the SRSS in the South Central Athletic Conference final earlier this month.
The Winnipeg Jets have lost back-to-back games for the first time this month. Jake Oettinger made 27 saves for his first shutout of the season as Dallas defeated Winnipeg 2-0 at Canada Life Centre. Joe Pavelski and Tyler Seguin did the goal scoring for the Stars. Connor Hellebuyck stopped 19 shots in net for the Jets.
The Professional Women's Hockey League is set for puck drop on New Year's Day. Toronto will play host to New York in the PWHL's first-ever regular-season game at Mattamy Athletic Centre. Montreal will pay a visit to Ottawa at T-D Place the following day. The PWHL says the venues for all six teams' home openers will be among the primary facilities they use.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced a two-year contract extension for General Manager Kyle Walters. Assistant General Manager/Director of U.S. Scouting Danny McManus and Senior Assistant General Manager/Director of Player Personnel Ted Goveia will also remain with the football club. All three men have played instrumental roles in the success of the franchise, particularly over the last seven years during which the club has posted double-digit win campaigns and advanced to four consecutive Grey Cup games, with championships in 2019 and 2021. Walters was first named the 17th general manager in franchise history on November 26th, 2013 after previously serving as an assistant coach and assistant GM. The 2024 season will mark his 14th year with the club. McManus was first hired by the Blue Bombers in a personnel capacity in December of 2013 and 2024 will mark his 10th season with the organization. McManus heads up the Blue Bombers U.S. scouting, while working closely with Walters and Goveia in shaping the club’s negotiation list of prospects. Goveia will also be entering his 10th year with the Blue Bombers in 2024, having first been hired by the club in December of 2013. Goveia has been heavily involved in the scouting department in both Canada and the U.S.
Gabriel Roy captured the Provincial AAAA Junior Varsity boys volleyball championship on Monday night in Winnipeg. Les Roys head coach Dan Lother will join Clayton Dreger on Sportsbeat which airs Wednesdays at 5:15 p.m. on AM 1250 Radio.
